My Teaching Philosophy
Children enter my classroom with their own unique personalities and levels of ability. It is my goal to offer them an environment in which they can grow academically, socially, and spiritually, but also an environment in which they feel completely comfortable sharing all their gifts and talents with others.
What is special about what I do?
In teaching first grade I help children become readers and that is definitely my favorite part of the job. My students come to me with a wide range of reading abilities. I strive to meet each child’s individual needs. I use a combination of whole- group, small-group, and individual instruction to develop their reading skills. It is challenging, but SO rewarding. The growth you see in each student by the end of first grade is tremendous!
What is special about Jordan?
Jordan school has always been a special place because we are like a family. We are fortunate to have such a caring, dedicated staff as well as such caring, concerned, and involved families. At Jordan we care about the WHOLE child. We work very hard to challenge our students academically, but we also help them to grow spiritually and morally into respectful, thoughtful, and caring individuals.
What am I most looking forward to this year?
I just received a Smart board in my classroom and I am VERY excited to explore the many opportunities this technology will bring to my lessons! The students are going to love it! I have also attended two recent workshops on new strategies for teaching reading so I’m anxious to implement some new techniques into my reading curriculum. And, of course, I’m so excited to see the changes as our school building grows and we are able to welcome the junior high students here in the spring.
